The Mother's brand was originally introduced as Mother's Oats in 1893 by the Great Western Cereal Company. The original canisters featured an image of a mother holding a baby, symbolizing a mother's love for her child.

Mother's Oats was purchased by The Quaker Oats Company in 1911, which allowed Quaker to enter into the natural foods market with the introduction of Mother's Oat Bran in 1982. The Quaker Oats Company was also the first major consumer packaged goods company to market and distribute a brand specifically for the natural foods market.

Mother's PackagingOver the next few years, the Mother's hot cereal line was expanded to include products such as Whole Wheat, Rolled Oats and Instant Oatmeal. Quick Cooking Barley and Toasted Wheat Germ were also added to the Mother's product line. Mother's was the first natural cereal brand to place an "oat heart health claim" on its packaging in 1997.

In 1985, The Quaker Oats Company acquired the Arden Rice Cakes business. The natural foods portion of the business was incorporated under the Mother's brand. Mother's introduced its popular line of 100% natural Ready-to-Eat cereals in 1997, including Peanut Butter Bumpers and Cinnamon Oat Crunch. Both of these cereals won the 1999-2001 Best of Show Award from the American Tasting Institute.
